Rain the key for Mask; Weekend Preview

Backing up after a gallant run at Sandown last weekend, Mask of Time will hopefully relish the wet conditions at Ballarat on Saturday.

The imported entire was brave on a hard track in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes last weekend finishing fourth but we are hopeful he can improve to first in the 2200m Listed Sportsbet Ballarat Cup.

We don’t think the 2200m will be an issue for him, but he will need a good run from the barrier and he is an each-way chance.

Mark Zahra will take the ride from an awkward barrier 20.

Earlier in the day at Ballarat, we have three-year-old filly The Closer contesting the Vobis Gold Eureka Stockade over 1400m.

She put in a good run at Flemington first-up over a distance that isn’t particularly her best.

It is a strong race, but we think she has a good each-way chance.

Linda Meech takes the ride from barrier five.

On Sunday at Ararat we have last start winner Typhoomerang running in a BM58 over 1100m.

She won well at Mildura on Melbourne Cup day and her work was sharp on Tuesday, so we think she will be hard to beat.

Stable apprentice Teo Nugent takes the ride from barrier six.

Closer two home at Kilmore we have Oyashio Drift running in a 3YO maiden over 1100m.

We are a bit unsure about her and her capabilities, so we are looking forward to seeing how she goes, however, she will need to improve on her first start to win this.

She will be ridden by Jamie Kah from gate three.

We then have Amicabeel contesting a 1600m maiden.

She ran well last start but just got too far back in the run.

We think the mile will suit her and she should have a good chance in this race.

She will also be ridden by Jamie Kah from barrier one.

Our final runner of the weekend is First Light Racing’s King Kabuto who will kick of his campaign in a BM64 over 1200m.

He looks well but this distance is not his best so look for him once he gets over a bit more ground.

Ben Thomson will take the ride from barrier two.
